- A one-paragraph summary up top (the
>blockquote): what the product is, who it is for, in plain words. - Grouped links with one-line descriptions: docs, pricing, API reference, integrations, comparisons.
- Only pages worth reading. It is a curated map, not a sitemap dump.
- Markdown links an agent can follow, often to
.mdversions of docs pages, plus an optionalllms-full.txtwith full text.
What a good llms.txt looks like (annotated)
A complete file for a made-up product, part by part. The structure follows the llms.txt proposal (v2): an H1, a blockquote summary, optional detail, then H2 sections of links.
# Acme Analytics
H1 with the site or product name. The only required part of the file.
> Privacy-friendly product analytics for SaaS teams. > Free up to 10k events a month; paid plans from $20/month.
Blockquote summary: what it is, who it is for, what it costs. Agents read this first.
Acme is hosted in the EU and does not use cookies. The API is REST with token auth.
Optional detail in plain Markdown (paragraphs or lists, no headings): facts an agent should know before following any link.
## Docs - [Quickstart](https://acme.com/docs/quickstart.md): install in 5 minutes - [API reference](https://acme.com/docs/api.md): endpoints and auth
An H2 "file list". Each item is a Markdown link, then optionally ": notes". Linking to .md versions of pages gives agents clean text.
## Product - [Pricing](https://acme.com/pricing): plans and limits - [Acme vs Mixpanel](https://acme.com/compare/mixpanel)
The pages people ask AI about: pricing, comparisons, integrations. Curated, not a sitemap dump.
## Optional - [Changelog](https://acme.com/changelog) - [Blog](https://acme.com/blog)
A section named "Optional" has a special meaning: agents can skip these links when they need a shorter context.
Per the proposal, the file can also live at a subpath (for example /docs/llms.txt) and then covers the URLs under that path; agents should use the most specific one. Pages can point to their llms.txt with rel="describedby" and to a Markdown version with rel="alternate" type="text/markdown".
