What Notion Sites's own documentation says about how AI crawlers see sites built with it, and the exact settings for robots.txt, llms.txt, structured data and the sitemap.

## How Notion Sites delivers pages to crawlers

**Not documented** (Not documented: check yourself)

Notion's help center doesn't say whether a published page's text is in the HTML or added by JavaScript. Run RankRoot's audit on your live URL: it fetches the page without running JavaScript, like most AI crawlers, and shows how much of your text comes through.

Why it matters: many AI crawlers don't run JavaScript. If your text only appears after scripts run, they may see an empty page.

## Make your content readable without JavaScript

1. Publish the page: open it, select **Share**, open the **Publish** tab, then **Publish**. Notion says publishing a page also publishes all of its subpages, so check what's nested under it first.
2. Make it searchable: **Share** > **Publish** > **Search engine indexing**, then turn on **Discoverable on the web**. This is available on the free plan too.
3. Notion says Sites can take up to four weeks to be indexed and show up in search results, so don't judge it after a day.
4. Run the [free audit](https://getrankroot.com/#scan) on your live URL to see whether crawlers get your text.

## robots.txt: let AI search crawlers in

1. Notion's help center doesn't document a way to edit `robots.txt` on a Notion Site, and it doesn't say which AI crawlers are allowed.
2. Open `yourdomain.com/robots.txt` (or your `notion.site` address plus `/robots.txt`) to see what's served, and run the [AI crawler checker](https://getrankroot.com/tools/ai-crawler-checker) to see which bots get through.
3. If you need per-bot rules, you need a host where you control the files. The [robots.txt guide for AI crawlers](https://getrankroot.com/guides/robots-txt-ai-crawlers) explains which bots to allow.

## Add llms.txt

1. Notion's help center doesn't mention llms.txt, and it documents no way to upload a file to the root of a Notion Site.
2. If your product's main site lives elsewhere (a separate domain or subdomain you control), publish llms.txt there with the [llms.txt generator](https://getrankroot.com/tools/llms-txt-generator) and link to your Notion pages from it.
3. On the Notion Site itself, clear page titles, descriptions and readable text do the work: that's what AI search tools read.

## Add JSON-LD and head code

1. Title and description (paid plans): **Share** > **Publish** > **Site customization**. Notion says the page title and description are used in share previews and for SEO.
2. Share image (paid plans): in **Share preview**, Notion uses your Site's cover image and title by default. Hover over the preview and select **Upload image** to use your own.
3. Favicon (paid plans): under **Favicon**, choose **Page icon** or **Upload image**.
4. Notion's help center documents no custom code or `<head>` access for Sites, so you can't add your own JSON-LD there. Put Organization JSON-LD on a main site you control instead.
5. Google Analytics (paid plans): **Site customization** > **Google Analytics**, then enter your measurement ID.

## Sitemap

1. Notion's help center doesn't say whether Notion Sites get a `sitemap.xml`. Try `yourdomain.com/sitemap.xml` to see if one is served.
2. Link to your important published pages from your home page, so crawlers can find them by following links.
3. On a paid plan, set a **Homepage** for your domain (Notion's domain settings in **Settings**) so the root of your domain shows your main page.

## Common mistakes

- Forgetting the indexing toggle. Publishing alone isn't enough: turn on **Discoverable on the web** under **Search engine indexing**.
- Publishing a parent page with private subpages under it. Notion publishes all subpages along with the page.
- Changing your `notion.site` domain later. Notion says old links that start with the previous domain stop working.
- Building your main brand site on a free `notion.site` address. Notion says it can reclaim a `notion.site` domain at any time, and you can lose a custom one if the workspace isn't actively used.
- Trying to connect a root domain. Notion's custom domain setup needs a subdomain such as `www`; redirect the root domain to it at your DNS provider. On Cloudflare, Notion says to turn the proxy off for the record.

## FAQ

### Can Notion Sites show up in ChatGPT and Google?

They can be crawled once you turn on Search engine indexing (Share > Publish > Search engine indexing > Discoverable on the web). Notion says indexing can take up to four weeks. Whether an AI tool cites the page depends on what's on it.

### Can I edit robots.txt or add llms.txt on a Notion Site?

Notion's help center doesn't document either. Check yourdomain.com/robots.txt to see what's served, and publish llms.txt on a site you control if you have one.

### Can I add a custom domain to a Notion Site?

Yes, on a paid plan with the custom domain add-on ($10/month, or $8/month billed annually, per domain). You add a CNAME record pointing to external.notion.site plus a TXT record, and you must use a subdomain such as www.

### Can I add structured data (JSON-LD) to a Notion Site?

Notion's help center documents no custom code or head access for Sites. You can set the title, description, share image and favicon on paid plans; put JSON-LD on a main site you control.
